What has a beginning definitely has an ending.

Last year it was Germany dropping Adidas for Nike a move that split the internet and sent Germany fans into mourning. Now the swoosh is on the other foot. Nigeria could be making the switch from Nike to Adidas starting in 2027, with sources claiming the NFF president referenced the move at a press conference before his recent resignation.

A partnership that reportedly became culture

This would bring an end to what has been an eleven-year relationship between Nike and the Super Eagles. And what a run it has reportedly been. The 2018 Naija kit launch remains one of the most celebrated moments in modern kit culture three million pre-orders in 24 hours, queues outside stores, resale prices that rivalled sneakers. That kit did not just represent a football team. It represented a generation of Nigerians who saw themselves in it. The boldness, the colours, the pride. Nike understood the assignment.

This would not be a new relationship-it would be a reunion

What most people are missing in this conversation is that Nigeria and Adidas have history. Deep history. Adidas previously supplied Nigeria during their 1994 World Cup debut in the United States and their 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumphed two of the most defining moments in Super Eagles history. So if this move does materialise, it is less a new chapter and more of a return to something familiar.

Adidas has been laying groundwork

Adidas has been visibly planting its flag in Nigeria with the opening of its flagship store in Lagos, one of the largest in West Africa, collaborations with local creative talent, campaigns rooted in Nigerian culture.

None of that feels accidental in hindsight. Whether by design or coincidence, Adidas has been building presence in the Nigerian market, and a national team kit deal would be the centrepiece of that push.

That broader context is what mainstream football media is largely ignoring in this story.

What it could mean for the kit

The 2018 Nike moment set a standard. Adidas would know exactly what they are walking into. The pressure to deliver something that honours Nigeria's football identity while pushing the visual language forward would be real. If this deal does happen, we will be watching very closely.
