Official; Newcastle United appoint Eddie Howe as head coach under the new Public Investment Fund regime

Eddie Howe has been appointed the new coach of Newcastle United. He is now the first coach of the post Mike Ashley era.

The search for Steve Bruce’s replacement

After weeks of debate and scanning through potential coaches, Newcastle has settled on Eddie Howe to lead the Toon army. The former Bournemouth defender/coach Eddie Howe was pictured at the 1-1 draw against Brighton during the weekend, but things have now been made official. He will join the Magpies and take charge of his first game in two weeks against Brentford. It is not clear what caretaker coach Graeme Jones will be up to.

Following the sacking of Steve Bruce, Amanda Staveley was tasked with bringing in a new coach and technical staff for the new ownership of the club. The club sounded out multiple coaches but received negative responses. Antonio Conte, who has since joined Tottenham, Paulo Fonseca, Erik Ten Hag, Graham Potter, and Unai Emery were all sounded out, but nothing materialized. Eddie Howe, who has been out of a job since leaving Bournemouth in 2020, is the new man on the job.

Mohammed bin Salman’s Public Investment Fund took over Newcastle from Mike Ashley after months of negotiations. They also had to meander their way around issues like broadcasting rights and clear Human rights violations. The first step in rebuilding was to let Steve Bruce go and bring in a coach to lead the new regime. They have found a man who can do the primary job of staving the Magpies from relegation. Make no mistake, that is the task at hand. They are not aiming for European spots. Newcastle United needs to avoid relegation. All the Saudi millions make no sense when you are in the Championship, no?

Who is Eddie Howe?

Eddie is a Bournemouth legend through and through. He made over 300 appearances for them as a player and coached more than 450 Bournemouth games across two spells. Eddie, 43, has spent 25 years of his life with The Cherries. He helped sign and develop players like Ryan Fraser, Matt Ritchie, and Callum Wilson of Newcastle. Eddie also signed Dutch winger Arnaut Danjuma, who is having a breakthrough season at Villarreal. He also signed Danny Ings and Kieran Trippier while at Burnley for three seasons.

Eddie Howe is a coach that can help them survive the English Premier League. He kept Bournemouth in the EPL for five seasons before their relegation in 2020. Eddie is the right coach for this level, and maybe after a few seasons of stability, they can start shooting for a bigger name. Newcastle sits 19th on the EPL log. They need a man that can lift them from that abyss. Eddie’s that man!

What has been said?

Eddie Howe: “It is a great honor to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family. This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players. I would like to thank the club’s owners for this opportunity and thank the club’s supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together.”

Amanda Staveley:

“We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process. As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward. He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James’ Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions.”
