After dismissing Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Manchester United has now appointed German legend Ralf Rangnick as their interim head coach until the end of the season. He’ll then step aside and help the club decide on a new coach while taking up a consultancy role at the club for the next two years. He leaves Lokomotiv Moscow where he was director of football.
Despite links to Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Zinedine Zidane, and Brendan Rodgers, the Manchester United hierarchy has appointed Rangnick who is famous for leading the Red Bull project in football. Mauricio Pochettino, Erik Ten Hag, and Brendan Rodgers are thought to be the main candidates for the permanent job.
Ralf Rangnick said: “I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club. The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience. All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfill their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team. Beyond that, I look forward to supporting the club’s longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.”
Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the first team until the 63-year-old’s work visa is finalized. Ironically, his most recent Champions League game was at Old Trafford, when his Schalke side fell to a 4-1 defeat in the second leg of their semi-final in May 2011. Manchester United will face Ajax on Thursday, but the German manager is not expected to be on the bench.
