Manchester United & Ole Gunnar Solskjaer part ways
Manchester United has sacked Norwegian manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the club’s poor start to the season. United suffered an embarrassing 4-1 defeat to Watford on Saturday and the higher-ups have decided to part ways with the former Molde & Cardiff City boss. Despite signing heavyweights like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, and Raphael Varane, the red devils have won just 4 games from their 13 this season. They have suffered losses to Manchester City, Watford, Leicester City, Aston Villa, and West Ham (EFL Cup).
Mike Phelan will also leave the club while Michael Carrick & Darren Fletcher will continue in their current roles. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial record for Manchester United is 168 games, 92 wins, 35 draws, and 41 losses. United scored 323 goals in this period and conceded 198.
Who will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?
United have sounded out Zinedine Zidane, but he looks reluctant to take the job. They have missed out on the opportunity to snap up Antonio Conte who has since joined Tottenham. It looks like Brendan Rodgers and Erik Ten Hag are the primary candidates to take up the job at Old Trafford. Rodgers is not an inspiring candidate as his Leicester team is saddled in 12th after taking a 3-0 beating from Chelsea. ETH might be reluctant to take the job right now as his Ajax team is in sparkling form. They are dark-horse contenders for the UEFA Champions League. That decision to give OGS 3 more games is looking very stupid now isn’t it?
Solskjaer was booed by a section of away fans at full time but remained bullish in his post-match press conference insisting that he can turn United’s season around. He will not get the chance to do so but will receive a severance payment of around £7.5 million for his troubles.
What next for United?
The red devils will travel to Spain for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League tie against Villarreal before another trip to table leaders Chelsea. They will then welcome Arsenal.
