Marcos Alonso: Spanish defender set to sign for FC Barcelona from Chelsea

Marcos Alonso celebrates a goal for Chelsea passionately
Barcelona are close to making Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso their sixth signing of the summer

Marcos Alonso is close to completing a transfer to FC Barcelona from Chelsea for £7 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. The left-wing-back will follow his father’s footsteps. The senior Marcos Alonso represented the Catalan club for five years.

Barcelona have been pushing for the 31-year-old Chelsea defender after signing Andreas Christensen for free. The former Fiorentina and Bolton man was a top target. They were intent on signing Cesar Azpilicueta too, but the club stalwart opted to sign a two-year extension with The Blues.

Barca are pushing for Alonso to back up Jordi Alba. Alejandro Balde has been doing an okay job, but coach Xavi Hernandez wants to add more experience with Alonso.

Marcos Alonso has spent the last six seasons in London with topsy-turvy performances. While he is defensively susceptible, slow, and a bad crosser of the ball, he has impeccable technique, timing, and finishing.

Some of his volleys and freekicks over his 211 appearances with the blues will be etched in fans memories forever. He scored 29 goals and assisted 23 more across those appearances. The Spanish international also won five titles during his time in England.

Marcos Alonso will become Barcelona’s sixth signing of a summer of supposed financial woes. Barcelona have signed Christensen, Franck Kessie, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski. Barcelona also tied Ousmane Dembele to a new contract.
