Built for Speed: Nike Unveils New Mercurial Vapor and Superfly Football Boots
Nike has unveiled the latest evolution of its iconic Mercurial line, introducing two distinct football boots designed around different interpretations of speed: the Mercurial Vapor 17 and Mercurial Superfly 11.
The Mercurial Vapor 17 is the lightest Mercurial ever essentially a sprint-spike for the pitch optimised for explosive first steps and tight-space agility. In contrast, the Mercurial Superfly 11 packs a forefoot Air Zoom unit and ultra-responsive ZoomX foam to sustain top speed over longer runs.

Birdiefootball attended an exclusive Nike briefing with product manager Odinga Nimako, who explained this dual approach: Vapor covers short bursts and rapid cuts, while Superfly is like a marathoner’s shoe for breakaway runs. Footballers such as Joshua Kimmich, Lennart Karl and Aleksandar Pavlovic, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr, Sam Kerr, Salma Paralluelo and Cristiano Ronaldo will wear them.
Recognising that speed in modern football comes in different forms, Nike has split the Mercurial franchise into two clear categories. The Vapor 17 is built for explosive acceleration, quick turns, and rapid movements in tight spaces, while the Superfly 11 is engineered for players who thrive in open-field situations and rely on sustained pace throughout a match.

The Vapor 17 arrives as the lightest Mercurial ever produced. Inspired by sprint spikes, it features a streamlined construction, Atomknit upper, and FlyLite plate designed to support quick bursts of speed and sharp changes of direction.
Meanwhile, the Superfly 11 introduces Nike’s most advanced speed system in the Mercurial family. A visible Air Zoom unit under the foot helps players generate energy return while maintaining top speed over longer distances. The boot also returns to a low-cut collar design for the first time in over a decade.

Nike says the new models were developed using insights from decades of running innovation and extensive on-pitch testing, with the aim of helping players create and exploit space at crucial moments.
The new Nike Mercurial Vapor 17 and Superfly 11 will be available from June 1 via Nike and selected retailers, with wider release beginning June 4.
