
All was going well. Barcelona had managed to get Lionel Messi to agree to a lower salary. The Argentine picked up the Copa America over the summer and was due back in training soon. Today was set as the day that the contract would be signed. Things have not gone according to plan. After a series of suspicious tweets from journalists, Barcelona announced that even though they reached an agreement and both parties were willing to commit, the deal will not be possible due to economic and structural obstacles placed by La Liga. Whether this is punishment for the European Super League , or due to genuine concerns about Barcelona’s financial situation remains to be seen.
