TSV 1860 München 1965 - 66 Retro Shirt The 1980 – 81 season was one of highs and lows for TSV 1860 München. In walked Rudi Völler, a young talent joining from Kickers Offenbach, who quickly looked at home at 1860. Völler hit double figures in the iconic Doppeldusch-sponsored shirt in his debut season, a glimpse of what was to follow from the German striker, helping Die Löwen to a near invincible form away from home going unbeaten for all but two away games. In the end and after putting up a fierce fight, Die Sechzger had to cede their spot in the Bundesliga after a narrow relegation by just one point.

The 1965-66 season represented the pinnacle of TSV 1860 München's long and illustrious history as die Löwen became German champions for the first and only time. Max Merkel's fine side rounded off a magnificent three-year period which had brought DFP Pokal success, a European Final and now the Bundesliga title itself. A 2-0 away win at closest rivals Borussia Dortmund on the penultimate round of fixtures was the defining result and a fitting reward for this exciting team. Rudi Brunnenmeier and Peter Grosser provided the goals, but this was a genuine team effort.

The move into the 1990s proved a welcome restart for TSV 1860 München after the troubles of the previous decade. After several near things, the summer of 1990 saw the club put in place the structures that would see them run away with the following season's Oberliga Bayern and earn a place back in the 2. Bundesliga after nine seasons. Karsten Wettberg arrived as coach and newcomers like Rainer Berg and Florian Hinterberger all played a part in an unbeaten 32 game League season, followed by an unbeaten 6 game play-off campaign that secured promotion in style.

After the thrilling highs of the 1960s, the following decade saw TSV 1860 München playing mostly outside the Bundesliga. The club kicked off the 1973-74 season in the Regionalliga Süd and spent much of the season chasing promotion to the Bundesliga alongside big regional rivals FC Augsburg. When the two met at the Olympiastadion a mighty crowd of more than 80,000 attended, the biggest-ever attendance the stadium attracted in its lifetime. Ultimately die Löwen finished third in the League, just a point outside the Bundesliga play-off places and Rudi Gutendorf's side had to be content with a place in the first-ever national 2.Bundesliga the following season.
