Sevilla reject a second bid from Newcastle for Diego Carlos worth €25 million – the Andalusian club won’t let him leave for less than his €80 million release clause

Sevilla do not want to sell the player

Sevilla bounce Newcastle's second bid for their 28-year-old central defensive titan Diego Carlos

According to reports in Spain, Sevilla have rejected Newcastle’s second bid for Diego Carlos. The bid is worth €25 million, but the Europa League champions insist on his release clause that is €80 million. Newcastle are prepared to go as high as €40/45 million, but that will not intrigue Sevilla because they have a release clause to stand on. Sevilla notoriously rejected Chelsea’s advances for Kounde, insisting on his release clause. Monchi drives a hard bargain. Newcastle may have to take their eyes elsewhere after failing with moves for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos. Eddie Howe‘s side have signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, but they still need defenders to block their leaky backline.

The 28-year-old Brazilian central defender has formed an integral partnership with Jules Kounde under Julen Lopetegui. It is not hard to see why the Tyneside club is interested in his services. He is stocky, hard as nails, and blessed with incredible athleticism. The former Nantes defender can also ping a ball from his preferred left side of the defense. He can do it with both feet. His aggression + impeccable passing matches Kounde’s calm and ball progression. It also helps that Lopetegui has them playing in a solid structure. That aggression has made him give away 1 penalty. He has also made 2 errors leading to goals. Errors notwithstanding, he is better than what Newcastle currently have. He has won 65% of his aerial duels and 63 % of his ground duels in La Liga this campaign. Diego Carlos would have been a massive upgrade on the Newcastle backline, but that deal seems implausible.
