Merseyside Police have launched an investigation into an alleged assault after a video appeared of Cristiano Ronaldo smashing a fan’s phone following Manchester United’s loss to Everton on Saturday afternoon. Footage shows a frustrated Ronaldo striking the phone out of a young Everton fan’s hand as he left the Goodison Park pitch. The 37-year-old apologized on social media after describing the incident as an ‘outburst’.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “As players were leaving the pitch at 2.30 pm, it was reported that a boy was assaulted by one of the away team as they left the pitch. Inquiries are underway, and officers are currently working with Everton to review CCTV footage and are carrying out extensive witness inquiries to establish if an offense has taken place. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police social media desk via Twitter MerPolCC or Facebook Merseyside Police contact center quoting reference number 228 of 9 April 2022.”

Ronaldo said: “It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing. Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, and patient and set an example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game. I would like to apologize for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair play and sportsmanship.”
Anthony Gordon scored in the early moments to give relegation-threatened Everton three important points against United. The defeat further damages United’s already slim hopes of finishing in the top four.

CR7 returned to the starting XI after missing last weekend’s 1-1 draw against Leicester City due to illness. He struggled to make an impact in the game. The defeat left United rooted in seventh place. Tottenham Hotspur and the relentless Antonio Conte are now six points clear of the Red devils. What a stupid decision it was not to hire him when they sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer! Ralf Rangnick‘s team may now face a year with no Champions League football.
