Aston Villa have appointed Steven Gerrard as head coach after sacking Dean Smith on Sunday

Aston Villa has announced Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard as their head coach after parting ways with Dean Smith. While he was trying his best, Dean’s run of five defeats was poor and left Christian Purslow with a decision to make. He went for the ax, and he has swooped over to Ibrox to bring in Steven Gerrard. The former English international spent three years honing himself at Rangers in Scotland. He toppled the Celtic dynasty. Last year, the 41-year-old led the club to its first title in ten years. At the moment, they lead the Scottish Premier League, and they are four points clear. Christian Purslow was a former managing director of Liverpool and will know all about a man that made 710 appearances for the Merseyside club.

Steven Gerard said; “Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football, and I am immensely proud to become its new head coach. In my conversations with [co-owners] Nassef [Sawiris], Wes [Edens], and the rest of the board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club, and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club. Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to wish the players, staff, and supporters the very best for the future.”

Stevie G is back in the English Premier League

Christian Purslow said: “Since moving into coaching after his illustrious playing career, Steven began by managing and developing top young players in the Liverpool FC academy which is the experience we value highly at Aston Villa. It has been very clear in our discussions with him that Steven’s coaching ambitions, philosophy, and values entirely match those of Aston Villa. We are excited he has agreed to lead us in the next phase of our ambitious plans as we look to build on the progress made since Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens took over the club in 2018.”

The Job at Hand
Steven Gerard has to steer the Villains away from their current position on the table. 16th. They dangle above the relegation zone by two points. His next five games are against Brighton, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Leicester City before the Birmingham club travels to Liverpool for what should be a special tie. Gerrard’s numbers at Rangers are promising for fans of Aston Villa. In 193 games in charge, he has won 125, drawn 42, and lost just 26.
