Juventus 1-1 AC Milan; Italian rivals play out an enthralling draw in Turin

Ante Rebic climbed highest to score as AC Milan held Juventus to a 1-1 draw in Turin

Old rivals, new battles

Juventus started their second chapter under Max Allegri with some tepid results but they began to look serious again. They lost to Napoli thanks to a Kalidou Koulibaly winner but, they beat Malmo 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League. They are beginning to get their shit together. Allegri had also never lost to Pioli in 15 games.

Milan lost to Liverpool in their entertaining midweek tie. They were outclassed by Liverpool but made a nuisance of themselves. Enough to lose only 3-2. Stefano Pioli’s side beat Lazio in the Serie A last week, and they have conceded only once this campaign. With Zlatan Ibrahimovic injured and Olivier Giroud out with Covid, Ante Rebic had to start as the number 9.

First Half

Juventus came out with aggression, and they were all over Milan. It was no surprise when Alvaro Morata gave Juve the lead in the fourth minute. Theo Hernandez gave the ball away, and then Morata raced through before chipping Mike Maignan. Juve 1-0 Milan.

That was Morata’s 50th goal for Juventus. The Spaniard was causing the Rossoneri backline all sorts of problems, stealing ahead of Simon Kjaer to poke a chance towards the goal. Maignan was alert. Paulo Dybala stung the Frenchman’s gloves again. Milan tried hard to play through the press but, it was hard, and they had no focal point for long balls. Rafael Leao was pulling out the tricks but, no chance still.

On 23, Sandro Tonali won and fired a free-kick into the wall before getting a second chance that Wojciech Szczęsny smothers. Former Milan man Leonardo Bonucci headed a Dybala free-kick over the bar a minute later. Fikayo Tomori then `stood his ground in a foot race to prevent Adrien Rabiot from scoring. Anything dangerous Milan tried to do came through Brahim Diaz, and Juve paid him special attention.

Simon Kjaer pulled up with an injury as Pierre Kalulu came on for the Dane.

Tomori had to show his pace again as he tempered Morata. Milan finally worked an opening for Ante Rebic, whose shot was blocked. Tonali’s strike from the rebound went wide. At the interval, Juventus led by a lone goal.

Second Half

No change to both sides. Juve came out with more intention again. Morata had two half-chances but, he couldn’t make much of them. Milan tried to create but struggled to get out of their first gear. Bonucci sent a rasping ball over the top of the defense, and Rabiot nearly touched it in. Milan tried to create. They looked lively but struggled with their final ball. Diaz and Leao were probing but, they had no focal point.

Alexis Saelemaekers played a one-two with Diaz, and the youngster should have fired immediately. Juventus blocked his effort as he tried to dribble. Moise Kean replaced Morata, and Federico Chiesa came on for the impressive Juan Cuadrado.

On 73, neat interplay from Chiesa, Dybala, and Danilo fired a shot straight at Maignan. Minutes later, Ac Milan equalized. Ante Rebic rose highest to head in a Tonali corner. Juve 1-1 Milan. Dejan Kulusevski replaced Dybala. It finished that way as both sides took a point. Juventus were the better side for much of the game but they paid for leaving Rebic open for a corner. More work for the Bianconeri who are yet to win a game so far. The first time since the 1961/1962 season. Milan are still undefeated in Serie A after four games
