Clash of Title Contenders

Lampard and Mourinho in a match between Chelsea and Tottenham
Lampard and Mourinho in a match between Chelsea and Tottenham

The Form/Season so Far

Chelsea

On Sunday, we will witness a top of the table clash between 2 teams pundits and viewers consider title contenders. Chelsea has put aside a shaky few games and they are currently on a 6-win run. Frank Lampard has a team ripe with new-found defensive nous after adding Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, and Kai Hvertz to already interesting firepower.

Ziyech is Chelsea’s new magician. He is a chance-creation machine. Ziyech has created 7 big chances in 9 games for the blues. In midfield, Mason Mount continues his development from last season. He is blossoming into one fine midfielder alongside an already fine one. N’golo Kante has shaken the injuries and he looks back to his 16/17 Chelsea form in a deeper role. With their mix of youth and experience blossoming on the pitch, it is not hard to see them at the top end of the table come the 38th matchday.

Tottenham

They have won their last 5 games and sit at top of the table in the EPL. Jose Mourinho is not washed up. We thought you should know that. He will always be relevant in this beautiful game. It is now a year since he took over and he has transformed a team that needed rejuvenation. His cooperation with Daniel Levy on transfers has been brilliant and the players are adapting well. His tough love system is working with Tanguy Ndombele while Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s doggedness and control in the center is a valuable asset.

Harry Kane is back to his best with 13 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. It is not only his goal-scoring that is getting the plaudits but his playmaking for his partner in crime Heung-Min Son. The South Korean has 15 goals and 5 assists in all competitions this season. They are the most common goal-scoring combination in Europe right now.

Chelsea faced Tottenham in a may title decider that was so fierce it was named ‘the battle of the bridge’. The game ended in a draw, handing the title to Leicester City

History

Chelsea and Tottenham have a storied history as London rivals and tomorrow’s game will renew the rivalry. It will also see a return to Stamford Bridge for Chelsea’s most successful manager, Jose Mourinho. The two sides have played some of the best Premier League matches like the infamous battle of the bridge. There was also the time Tottenham ended Chelsea’s 13-match winning run under Antonio Conte thanks to 2 gorgeous Dele Alli headers. Chelsea has won the last 3 Premier League encounters between the two sides. They have 5 wins in 10 against Tottenham with 2 draws while Tottenham has won 3.

Frank Lampard vs Jose Mourinho

Last season, Lampard sprang a surprise tactical switch to a 3-4-3 that Mourinho’s side struggled to contain. Goals from Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso made sure Antonio Rudiger’s own goal didn’t mean much. Mourinho accused Lampard of using Conte’s ideas like it made a difference. He got the better of Lampard in the league cup tie earlier this season. Chelsea took the lead thanks to a Werner strike but conceded control to Tottenham who equalized through Erik Lamela. The game went to penalties and Tottenham won. In Lampard’s first season as a manager, his Derby County side faced Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United and Lampard’s side received praise for its attacking verve. With Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori in the team, they took the tie to United. The game ended in a draw but the rams won on penalties.

In Conclusion

The media, analysts, viewers, and pundits will bill this as a master vs apprentice match but it is a top of the table tie that we hope will entertain. The midfield battle will be interesting with the physical and ball-progressing Tottenham midfield a match for Chelsea’s Mount, Kante, and Havertz/Kovacic. Can Chelsea’s new resolute backline contain Kane and Son? How does Tottenham contain Ziyech and his deliveries? Joe Rondon is set to start in the absence of Toby Alderweireld, how will he do against Tammy/Giroud and the constant running of Werner? Tomorrow’s tie will also give us a hint of how the title race will go. Who do you think will come out on top?
