Chelsea set to sign Jules Kounde from Sevilla for £43m

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Sevilla for the transfer of Jules Kounde

Chelsea will soon complete a 43 million pound deal to sign French defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla. The deal is only waiting for Kurt Zouma to complete his move to West Ham. Kounde is one of the biggest defensive talents in football and Chelsea want to snap him up this summer. While Chelsea have no pressing need for a defender, that has never stopped the blues from signing a player. The 22-year-old has a release clause worth €80 million in his contract. He is on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs after a stellar 2020/21 campaign for Julen Lopetegui’s side & the Andalusian side needs to offload a few players due to the finances. Kounde is keen on the move to Stamford Bridge after two seasons in the Spanish top flight and personal terms have been agreed.

Chelsea refused to pay his release fee. They instead want to negotiate a deal that would avoid the clause. They made a player plus cash offer. One which included Kurt Zouma. Sevilla were keen on Zouma as they saw him as a good replacement for Kounde. With him included, their asking price would drop to less than £40m. The French defender turned down a move to Seville. He insists he wants to stay in London. West Ham want the defender. Despite agreeing to a €30M fee with Chelsea, Zouma’s salary demands could prove to be a stumbling block to the deal. Chelsea have agreed on personal terms with Kounde but they need to offload Zouma to complete the deal.

Sevilla director Monchi has spoken on the potential transfer, admitting that the club would sell for an “important” bid. “Many clubs have asked for Kounde. Of course, there’s interest but no official bid is on the table. I don’t know what’s going to happen. If an important bid arrives, we’ll sell, as this is our policy to improve the team.”

Thomas Tuchel has already spoken about the importance of new signings. The blues have already signed Romelu Lukaku for £98M but Tuchel is looking to strengthen his defense further. With the array of talents on display at the London club, one could say a move for another defender isn’t needed. At least not this summer. But with Thiago Silva (36) and Cesar Azpilicueta (32) nearing the end of their contracts, that narrative could easily be dismissed. Chelsea already have the likes of academy graduates Andreas Christensen and Trevor Chalobah, German swashbuckler Antonio Rudiger, Kurt Zouma, and Reece James who can also slot in at right-center back. However, Jules Kounde looks to be joining the UEFA Champions League winners and for a great price too.
