Carlos Queiroz has left his role as head coach of Egypt after the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) terminated his contract by mutual consent following his World Cup qualification failure. He confirmed he was leaving his job as coach of Egypt’s national team on Monday, ending speculation he would stay on despite failing to lead them to the World Cup. The former Real Madrid, Portugal, and Iran manager took charge of the Pharaohs last September when he replaced Hossam El Badry. The 69-year-old lost the AFCON 2021 final and missed out on the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualification after losing to Senegal on both occasions.
“To All, The Egyptian fans; Our supporters; My friendly and magical staff dream team; And to my wonderful players; Every new beginning that starts with one painful farewell, means that our hearts are full of gratitude, respect, and friendship. Those are my feelings right now,” he wrote on Twitter. The EFA said they had spoken with Queiroz and had agreed to part ways. The Pharaohs want to appoint a replacement before the next Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in June. Former striker Hossam Hassan and current Pyramids coach Ihab Gala are in the frame for the job.
