Brighton 0-0 Arsenal; Misfiring Gunners survive rampant Seagulls and claw their way to a point at the Amex Stadium

Graham Potter's Brighton & Mikel Arteta's Arsenal share two points at the Amex

Fresh off an impressive derby win against their North London neighbors Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal came into this tie looking to carry on where they left off.

Drenched in the south coast rain, they struggled to get going against a well-organized Brighton side. The seagulls proved too hard to break down. They dominated the game on all statistics. It was a game to forget for Mikel Arteta and his wasteful Gunners.

Bukayo Saka tested Robert Sanchez within the first minute but Brighton took control of the game early on. In the 20th minute, Aaron Ramsdale dropped Neal Maupay’s cross, and Lewis Dunk was on hand to pounce. It was one of those chances you simply cannot miss. However, Dunk did. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then hit the post soon after with a header. Saka followed with more threatening play but the hosts weathered the storm and stayed firmly on top.

Marking his return to the Amex for the first time since signing for Arsenal, Ben white almost gifted his old employerS a goal. A scintillating move resulted in Ben White deflecting the ball marginally over his crossbar. The hosts began to press. Neal Maupay couldn’t properly execute an acrobatic effort. Shane Duffy, a man on form, came close to breaking the deadlock but his awkward hit only found the side netting.

Brighton missed chances & they dominated possession in the first half. Their shot conversion was the problem. Sounds familiar, right? They failed to hit the target despite racking up eight shots in the first half alone. Aubameyang could have punished their wastefulness in front of the goal at the end of the half, but he wasn’t alert enough when Emilie Smith Rowe’s cross evaded Lewis Dunk.

Both teams had their opportunities in the second period. Smith Rowe forced Sanchez into a save after a wonderful solo run. It looked like it would have a dramatic climax after the referee Jonathan Moss had to review a penalty appeal from Brighton by himself. No penalty was his verdict.

After coming agonizingly close late on, the seagulls would eventually settle for a point. They would feel they should have won as they were the better team. Brighton have now drawn two consecutive games. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s winning run didn’t last very long. It has come to a wasteful end at three.
