Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Bayern Munich: Die Fohlen hold Die Rekordmeister to a draw at Borussia-Park

Borussia Monchengladbach held Bayern Munich to a draw in the opening game of the 21/22 Bundesliga season

Borussia Monchengladbach came out swinging against Bayern Munich at the Borussia-Park. They played some great football in the opening minutes as Bayern Munich struggled to get into the game. After only 10 minutes, Alassane Plea gave Die Fohlen the lead after Alphonso Davies lost the ball in a dangerous area. Gladbach 1-0 Bayern Munich. Not a great start to Julian Nagelsmann’s tenure. Bayern were looking tentative with Leon Goretzka losing possession twice in dangerous areas. Their passes were not clicking and they kept forcing the issue in the buildup phase.

After withstanding Gladbach for the first 15 minutes, Bayern started getting into their groove with Leroy Sane leading the charge. Robert Lewandowski had 2 great chances to score but Yann Sommer came out on top. Josip Stanisic from right-back had 1 very good chance to score and 1 half-chance. Sommer saved both. Then the inevitable happened. Corner-kick, Joshua Kimmich cross, and Lewandowski finished well. Gladbach 1-1 Bayern Munich. Half-time.

Sommer was amazing and Dayot Upamecano was impressive in this Bundesliga opener.

The second half started as rapaciously as the first. A Patrick Herrmann cross was given the right treatment by Stefan Lainer but nothing came of it. On 58, Serge Gnabry slipped Alphonso Davies in but the Canadian could not finish as Sommer saved again. Davies burnt Lainer down the Gladbach right and set up Lewy but Sommer saved again. Naggelsmann was going crazy on the sideline. Adi Hütter made some changes. He brought on Marcus Thuram for Plea and Jonas Hofmann for Herrmann.

On 70, Hannes Wolf stole the ball from Josip Stanisic and tried to set up Thuram. The Frenchman could not control it but set it up for Lars Stindl to shoot. Manuel Neuer saved it. Keanan Bennetts replaced Wolfe while Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala came on for Sane and Gnabry. On 76, Gladbach created a good chance as Lainer squared it for Thuram who could not connect to convert. 2 minutes later, Hofmann put a great pass across the goal and this time Stindl could not connect to convert.

Despite great defending in the first 70 minutes, Thuram began to rip Upamecano to shreds. He was lucky not to concede a penalty after Thuram went down in the box following a coming together. It stemmed from the former RB Leipzig man losing the ball too. Adi Hütter received a yellow for his protests but it was a good call by the referee. Kimmich had the last chance of a pulsating game when Coman dazzled before setting him up but the German midfielder shot wide. It ended in a draw but it was a great spectacle for the viewers. The Bundesliga opener finished Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Bayern Munich.
