Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with Marco Rose after one year in charge

Der BVB deemed the German unfit to take the club into a new era after a performance review

Following an intensive season analysis and performance review on Thursday, the Borussia Dortmund hierarchy has sacked Marco Rose after one trophyless season in charge.

CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, former sporting director Michael Zorc, incoming sporting director Sebastian Kehl, and external advisor Matthias Sammer were present in the meeting with the Gaffer when the club decided to move forward without the German. They wished him the best of luck in his next opportunity.

The decision comes as a big shock seeing as the BVB hierarchy reiterated on numerous occasions that the 45-year-old was the chosen one to usher the Black and Yellow into a new era. But after internal discussions, those in charge decided to move forward without Rose at the helm.

In a statement on the club’s website, Hans-Joachim Watzke said; “This day is not an easy one for all of us because the mutual respect among us, was, is, and remains great. After a season that was unsatisfactory for many reasons, we had to recognise that we did not reach our maximum potential in many areas.”

Marco Rose only joined Borussia Dortmund last summer and guided the club to a second-place finish. They ended the campaign eight points behind League winners Bayern Munich. But supposedly, disappointments in the Champions League, the Europa League, and DFB-Pokal were instrumental in the bosses sudden change of heart.

Der BVB failed to progress past the Champions League group stage, and was relegated to the Europa League. They were also knocked out of the Europa league by Rangers, who went all the way to the final, but were undone by Eintracht Frankfurt. The former Borussia Monchengladbach gaffer was earmarked as the scapegoat for those poor performances and has now paid the price.

Marco Rose took charge of 47 games in all competitions this season. He won 27, suffering 16 losses and four draws. His relatively short reign at the Signal Iduna Park ends with a win ratio of 57.45 percent. Performances may have been poor and not good enough by BVB standards, one might say, but considering he had only spent a year in the dugout and was in the middle of a rebuild, perhaps patient heads may have prevailed to see what the German had in store for the new season.

The newspapers claim that Edin Terzic is to return to the Borussia Dortmund dugout, and this time, he returns as permanent manager. During his tenure as interim manager, he led the Black and Yellows to the DFB-Pokal title during the 2020/21 season. But with the decision to appoint Rose as a permanent head coach already in place, the BVB bosses decided to make Terzic the club’s technical director.

Terzic was a Borussia Dortmund supporter growing up and enjoys a great standing at the club. During his time as interim head coach, he helped get the best out of a number of players in the Borussia Dortmund squad. With Rose sacked, the 39-year-old is the chosen one to move the club forward and lead Borussia Dortmund’s title charge next season.
