Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich; Bayern Munich win German Cup for the 9th time

Borussia Dortmund gegen Bayern Munich, Erling Haaland gegen Robert Lewandowski the commentator announced as the players rounded the center circle to pay homage to the Bayern legend Gerd Muller who passed on this Sunday at the age of 75. The First Half

Borussia Dortmund started in Rose’s famed 4222 formation and built play in the first phase in a 235 formation. Bayern started in their 4231 and they picked a 244 shape in the build-up. Dortmund gave the ball away in a dangerous area in the fourth minute but Serge Gnabry made a terrible decision with the ball. It came to nothing.

On 8, Felix Passlack gave the ball away in a dangerous place but again nothing came from it. Both sides matched each other for intensity and struggled to control the game. Again Passlack lost the ball high up the pitch and Bayern pounced, Thomas Muller had the final chance to put the ball in the net but his effort went wide. For the third time in five minutes, Passlack lost the ball in a dangerous area and Alphonso Davies set up Kingsley Coman for a shot that sailed over. Bad finish.

BVB had their first chance to score on 19 when Jude Bellingham slipped in Marco Reus but Manuel Neuer stuck out a leg to lift it over. Reus sent a cute free-kick over the bar after Niklas Sule brought Erling Haaland down in front of the box. The tackles were getting snappier and Reus clipped Dayot Upamecano. Joshua Kimmich confronted him. Tempers flaring. Youssoufa Moukoko fired a shot straight into the waiting palms of Neuer from a tight angle. Lewandowski missed a clear chance to score on 34 when Axel Witsel blocked his effort. From the corner, the Pole fired wide. Haaland put Moukoko through on goal and the youngster finished well but it was ruled out for offside. Manuel Akanji then delivered a spectacular over-the-top pass that Haaland controlled brilliantly. He then applied the finish but Neuer’s right leg kept it out.

Before halftime, Gnabry delivered a teasing ball in the box. It went behind Muller but Lewandowski was there to pounce and head it in. Borussia Dortmund 0-1 Bayern Munich.

The Second Half

No changes to both sides but Coman picked up a knock as the half started. He was replaced by Leroy Sane. Passlack’s miserable night continued as he was picked apart by Gnabry and Davies. The cross for Lewy was too close to the keeper but it went through to Muller who finished into an empty goal. Before halftime, Gnabry delivered a teasing ball in the box. It went behind Muller but Lewandowski was there to pounce and head it in. Borussia Dortmund 0-2 Bayern Munich. Bellingham gave Haaland a trivela pass that the Norwegian finished off but it was offside. On 63, Akanji found Passlack with a raking pass and he set it back for Bellingham. The young Englishman set himself well before setting it up for captain Reus. The German curled a delightful finish into the net. Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayern Munich.

Jamal Musiala and Corentin Tolisso came on for Muller and Gnabry. Just when it looked like BVB were back in the tie, Akanji miscontrolled the ball and gave it away to Tolisso who gave it to Lewandowski. He finished calmly beyond Gregor Kobel. Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Bayern Munich. Donyell Malen and Marco Pasalic replaced the anonymous Giovanni Reyna and Moukoko. BVB brought Passlack and Bellingham off for Jesus Reinier and Marius Wolf.
