AC Milan 1-2 Liverpool; Divock Origi winner sends Rossoneri out of the UEFA Champions League as flawless Liverpool make history at the San Siro

Atletico Madrid's win over FC Porto means they join Liverpool to secure their spot in the next round of the UCL

Once again Divock Origi came clutch for Liverpool as they beat AC Milanand send them out of the UEFA Champions League

Liverpool beat AC Milan despite fielding second-string side

Liverpool beat AC Milan to become the first English team to win all six of their UEFA Champions League group stage games. They came from behind to beat a lackluster AC Milan and maintain their 100% record in the competition.

Second place in group B was within the reach of three teams at the start of the final group stage games. Having already sealed qualifications, Liverpool’s travel to San Siro was a mere formality. After defeats in their first three matches, Stefano Pioli‘s men needed maximum points against Liverpool to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

Liverpool applied pressure looking to make an early statement but they couldn’t find a way through. Against the run of play, the Rossoneri struck first.

Fikayo Tomori looking to atone for his error in the reverse fixture gave the Rossoneri a glimmer of hope. Alisson failed to hold a corner-kick, and he was punished by the former Chelsea man who pounced to give his team the lead. Liverpool nearly responded immediately with Divock Origi driving his way into the box, and he forced a superb reaction save from Mike Maignan.

Mohamed Salah continues his stupendous form with another goal. He has now scored 20 goals and it is not yet halfway through the season

Relentless reds

The reds however remain undeterred and stuck to their game plan and the pressure paid off. Mike Maignan had done a stellar job keeping the reds at bay, but a shot from Alex Oxlade Chamberlain proved too hot to handle. The French man parried into the path of Mohammed Salah who roofed his shot and leveled the scores. The Egyptian wonder has been in impeccable form for Juergen Klopp’s Reds this season and looks unstoppable.

Milan needed three points, and it didn’t matter how they got it, Frank Kessie went down in the box shortly after halftime, but his penalty claims were waved away.

Sadio Mane was gifted possession minutes later by Tomori, and he forced Mike Maignan into yet another save. He parried into the path of Divock Origi who headed home. The Belgian has now scored in back-to-back games for Liverpool.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic barely got a sniff of goal as Milan offered little in terms of finding a way back into the game. Alisson denied Kessie in the dying embers of the game, but it was too little too late for the seven-time European champions who have been consigned to the bottom spot in group B. Atletico Madrid beat FC Porto to qualify from the group. The La Liga champions were bottom of the group at the beginning of the matchday.
